Colleen Hoover’s book “Regretting You” came to the big screen on October 24, 2025. Regretting You stars famous actors, Allison Williams, McKenna Grace, Dave Franco, and Mason Thames. It is a great story for all the rom-com lovers, but it also incorporates drama and tragedy. While it isn’t exactly a truthful representation, it’s still an enjoyable adaptation.
The film captures all the emotional themes of romance, guilt, and betrayal that Hoover did in the book. They both recount the story of Morgan Grant (Allison Williams) and her daughter, Clara Grant (McKenna Grace), as they navigate life after a traumatic event, revealing secrets that only strain their relationship further. However, there are still significant differences between the two. Like most film renditions of stories, viewers say the film lacked detail in various aspects, such as characters and interactions, settings, and style. Many scenes lacked the emotional depth they should’ve had, making the movie feel somewhat flat.
Besides these differences, there was yet another thing that brought some controversy to this movie. Many people did not want to watch the movie due to the controversy around the author and executive producer of Regretting You, Colleen Hoover. Despite her book’s popularity, the internet attacked her for romanticising abusive relationships, which is said to worry people because most of her audience are young teenage girls. The hate she received got so heated that she took a break from writing for almost two years before returning with her book, It Starts With Us, in 2022.
Despite all of this, the film Regretting You has already achieved great success as it reached the number one spot at the North American Box Office during the weekend of November 1st to 2nd, 2025. It was loved by its target audience, young females, and became the third-highest-grossing romantic film of the year. This movie also helped actors reach major accomplishments. For example, Regretting You was actor Mason Thames’ third film of the year, including How to Train Your Dragon and Black Phone 2, to reach number one at the box office. No actor has done this since Jim Carrey in the 90s.
Overall, the film reached the hearts of many romantic and sentimental viewers, like myself. It’s the perfect excuse to have a wholesome movie night with your friends.
