The lights begin to dim, popcorn and candy in your hand, and after months of waiting, Wicked: For Good is finally playing on the big screen. The second movie in the Wicked franchise has been highly anticipated by fans, ever since the first Wicked film came out last November and became one of the most talked about new movies of the year.
Wicked: For Good was released on November 21, 2025 and became an instant hit, bringing in roughly 143 million dollars nationally during its opening weekend in theatres. The movie stars, award winning actors Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande, played the Wicked Witch of the West Elphaba and Glinda the Good Witch respectively. The actors were apparently so phenomenal that they are now strong candidates for an Oscar; Grande for Best Supporting Actress and Erivo for Best Actress.
Fans of the Wicked musical can also expect to hear some of the classic songs from the original Broadway production such as “For Good” and “No Good Deed” in the movie adaptation.
With the characters being students no longer, the second movie takes place after the characters have graduated from Shiz Academy and have now moved on to new chapters in their lives, working new jobs, making new relationships, and facing new challenges that are harder than ever before. Elphaba and Glinda are now forced to be enemies in the eyes of the public, after making different choices upon learning the truth about the Wizard of Oz and about how he might not be so wonderful after all. Glinda is now known as the Good Witch of Oz, their enthusiastic sorceress leader and light of hope, and Elphaba as the Wicked Witch of the West, a dark witch who cursed the monkeys and is a “threat to the peace” of Oz.
With a new character from Kansas with pig tails and ruby red slippers, many shocking plot twists, and even some emotional heartbreak, the film shows exactly how there can be many many complicated layers to being both the villain and the hero of the story and the sacrifices they have to make.
