Zohran Mamdani, beat Andrew Cuomo in the NYC Mayor Election 2025. Mamdani, a progressive politician from New York City was elected Mayor of New York on November 4th, 2025.
Seattle locals are affected because Katie Wilson (our current mayor) is often compared to Mamdani with their specific perspectives and points of view. The pair have similar ideologies which connect them to citizens in the greater Seattle area. Both Katie Wilson and Zohran Mamdani won their mayoral races towards the end of 2025, they represent a new wave of younger, progressive leaders in major U.S cities. Their victories suggest that many voters, especially younger, low-income residents are looking for change. They want more affordable living, and policies that are tailored to everyday people instead of one group. Katie Wilson has worked as an activist, she pushed for better public transportation, and expanded transportation access to all. Wilson says she wants a city that works for everyone regardless of their background. Zohran Mamdani, won the New York City Election. He ran on outstanding ideas such as freezing the rent, free or affordable public services, expanded affordable housing, increased taxes on the wealthy, and better support overall for working families. Similar to Katie Wilson’s themes of affordability, Mamdani also campaigned for public transit access.
Yearbook Advisor, Mark Isakson states “I’ve had a number of conversations about the current state of the City of Seattle, obviously Katie won and it suggests that the city is divided since she won by a small margin, I had a number of friends who are left leaning, voted for democrats and are starting to get really tired of increasing property taxes with no benefit, some families are also getting frustrated with property crime and petty crime.
The overwhelming social media support from both states for both candidates has made this election one of the most watched in History. High school Spanish teacher Hannah Bellinger states about Katie Wilson “I think they see her as someone who’s in touch with someone. She’s done work in the community. Some people see it as an advantage and some people see it as a disadvantage. Everyone needs to start somewhere”. Mamdani has captured an audience all around America by doing things such as going against President Trump and being the first Muslim person to be elected mayor.
Mathematics teacher Alex Crane states “I believe that in the Harell vs. Wilson race there was seemingly an opportunity for Mayor Harell to win relatively easily and the fact that he not only did not win easily but did not win seems to suggest that there is some discontentment within the city of Seattle relative to the status quo and so when there’s changes in leadership I think it is a demonstration of a need of something different and so I think there’s an expectation in Seattle regardless of who voted for who that Mayor Elect Wilson will bring something that feels like change.”
Bellinger comments on how she believes Seattle families and residents perceive current mayor Katie Wilson. She states “There are families that maybe see that as her inexperience in politics, I don’t think she’s inexperienced but inexperienced in voted in politics like into a position of power, they might see Mayor Harol as a better choice because he’s already been there but I think everyone needs experience somewhere and just because someone’s been in the position doesn’t mean there the best one for it necessarily.” Isakson adds on “By and large I think the city is in a holding pattern (the city will vote democrat every single time constantly) even though there’s a big shift from Harell to Wilson, I think that there isn’t going to be a huge shift, it’s just which democrat they want to elect.”
Social Studies Teacher Teodor Ekstrom says “I think people were very excited about Zohran Mamdani’s candidacy and so they wanted some similar, younger progressive grassroots-y type.” Similar to this, both Mamdani and Wilson are making real attempts to make life more affordable and make changes in rent. Math teacher Kendra Nesland stated that “The people I know are open minded and willing to give her a chance because it’s time to give young people more opportunities.” Many Seattlites feel this way as Katie Wilson is 43 years old, less than 10 years older than the youngest mayor of Seattle ever by the name of Wesley C. Uhlman.
