Never in human history have you been more surveilled than you are today. From security camera footage to your browsing habits to law enforcement databases. According to ACLU, Flock sells cloud-connected cameras to police that capture your license plate wherever you drive; Palantir pulls data—regardless of its accuracy—from across government records, including passports, IRS tax files, and social security information; and AI companies steal art from artists to train their bots to create cheap knockoffs. We live in a society straight out of a dystopian novel, where people are prosecuted through these surveillance companies. ICE is a major investor in these technologies, using them to create a comprehensive profile of you, so they can make expedited enforcement decisions on you, which contributes to their holding of almost 70,000 people in detention centers across the country, according to NBC News. With the recent purchase of TikTok by Oracle, a company owned by Larry Ellison, who is a Trump ally, even the safe bastion of social media is threatened, with fears of bias, censorship, and data collection growing due to the association of Ellison with Trump and the bias that may be introduced from this connection, due to the extreme polarization in the US. Now more than ever, we need to come together to fight the aggressive overexpansion of surveillance across the United States, whether it’s through fighting for bills to limit the power of these companies, or just personally lessening your contribution to the extensive collection of data, any small step can keep us from falling into full blown dystopia.
