Six days before Christmas, on December 19th, 2025, the new SpongeBob movie released in theaters. The SpongeBob Movie: Search for SquarePants follows SpongeBob on a quest to prove himself to the legendary ghost pirate The Flying Dutchman with a journey through the Underworld.
Even before the release, the franchise pushed the film quite visibly towards audiences, with Nickelodeon running a “SpongeBob’s 12 Days of Christmas” countdown and Burger King releasing a timed-for-December SpongeBob meal.
The typical Bikini Bottom cast returns (Tom Kenny as SpongeBob, Bill Fagerbakke as Patrick, Rodger Bumpass as Squidward, and Clancy Brown as Mr. Krabs), alongside guest voices such as George Lopez and Isis “Ice Spice” Gaston.
The plot begins with SpongeBob questioning his sense of courage; he bigger and older now, but still gets shut out of rides and more daring adventures…because he’s SpongeBob. People assume he’s enthusiastic and fun, but not necessarily brave. To add to that, Mr. Krabs continuously brags about his experience as a “swashbuckling pirate”, which further encourages SpongeBob to prove his courage.
Determined to prove himself, SpongeBob comes across a stash of pirate relics owned by Mr. Krabs, accidentally releasing the ghost pirate the Flying Dutchman after blowing on a horn. The Dutchman is convinced that he can return to life if he swaps his soul with SpongeBob, and thus ropes the sponge (along with Patrick) to complete a series of trials in the Underworld to see if he is fit to swap souls with, under the guise of helping SpongeBob become a “swashbuckling pirate.”
The movie stays true to classic SpongeBob humor, in all its goofiness and absurdity, and the plot surrounding embracing your inner courage (even if you aren’t physically a “big guy”) would resonate with younger audiences. However, some have remarked that the newer content hasn’t hit with the same amusement as older content once did. In addition, I find it upsetting that SpongeBob films in the last 10 years have resorted to the same 3D animation that has been so overused by animation studios in recent years. The charm of the flat 2D style disappears, making the franchise generic.
However, overall, The SpongeBob Movie: Search for SquarePants is the perfect movie to show to family and younger siblings, but had more potential than what was put in front of the audience.
