Every year, the North Creek Commons fills with the sweet aroma of syrup on warm pancakes and chatter of seniors before their final assembly. Round tables are set with purple tablecloth and breakfast prepared by the local Bothell restaurants. But to have enough meals to feed hundreds of students money has to be spent, and thousands of dollars are being used on what is called Senior Breakfast.
Each graduating class has their own funds and how much depends on class fundraisers and such. Students usually have a say on how the money should be spent, but Senior Breakfast has always been North Creek’s tradition to hold at the end of every year. Before entering the doors to the gym where their last assembly will be held, seniors sit and eat breakfast together in the commons before school starts. Much of the graduating class’s funds are spent on simple breakfast. Many could find this event meaningful, as it is one of the last moments being at school with their friends and teachers. But others could say the money is being wasted and would be better spent on something else, such as prom.
North Creek has held prom at Hidden Meadows, Snohomish – the same venue for two years in a row. This wouldn’t seem like a big deal it’s a charming and scenic venue with open outdoors, but will it be the same location every year? Yes, it could be memorable and nostalgic but the question lies in whether it will continue to be enjoyable and unforgettable. Having a change in scenery could be exciting, such as in the city. Many groups take pictures before prom, a popular location has been Bellevue – with numerous scenic parks and gardens, specifically the Bellevue Botanical Garden – voted best public garden in 2023 by King 5. Dinner is also an essential part of prom and Bellevue is a hotspot for dining, whether that be casual or formal.
Many find themselves carpooling, as traffic can make traveling difficult. A closer venue could make transportation easier as well time-saving.
If graduating classes had the choice of letting go of Senior Breakfast and instead using the money to increase their prom budget for more complimentary and change of location, Bellevue could be a possible alternative.
