As the final stretch of the girls flag football season approaches, there is much to reflect on. As the second season of flag football at North Creek is towards the end of the season, the team has come a long way from last year. Flag football was new to many girls this year. Incoming freshmen and even some upperclassmen were excited to try out the sport, since it was new to most people. Numerous girls showed interest in the sport that two teams were formed, Varsity and Junior Varsity. As state finals approach, the Varsity team is excited to see what the end of the season will bring.
The Varsity team has been victorious in eight games, and has only suffered two losses this season. Last season the team struggled, this season held a change. “I’d say it’s been a really great boost for us…and have a lot of new people come and join…I think we’re in a really good spot,” junior Alex Barton said. Flag football is a fun sport and a great bonding experience. “When I started, I didn’t know some of the girls, but now I have made some new friends,” junior quarterback Sofia Gomez-Salas said. Joining a sport with other girls who were also new potentially encouraged freshmen to join.
Though the team has had a great experience, there are still struggles that they have to face. “I think being able to communicate with our other players…trying to understand where they are coming from,” Barton said. For some, meeting people for the first time could be a nervous experience. “I would say come ready to learn, and overall it’s a really fun sport,” Barton said. Many girls joined ready to learn. “What challenges me is when someone is down, everyone is down. Then we have to try to pick each other up,” Gomez-Salas said. Indicating after making a mistake or missing a pass, leads to regret or a guilty feeling. Part of being a good teammate is picking someone up when they feel overwhelmed.
The girls are looking to make a push to qualify for the postseason. With an overall winning record of (8-2) so far in the season, there is definitely optimism for the postseason.
“I love our coaches, they are all super nice…it’s been a really good season,” Barton said. “It’s been pretty good,” Gomez-Salas said. Flag football looks to continue to be a successful and popular sport for North Creek in the future.
