Every Thursday, like clockwork, our 5th period is elongated with a 5 minute broadcast aptly named “The Jungle”. Our 10 minute break was a use for a chance to grab a snack, move your body and take a breather. Instead we are held back for 300 grueling seconds when we could be doing absolutely anything else. The videos are cute and can strangle out a giggle but it is so uneccessary to take away the 10 minute break especially because of how long students sit down at a time, especially because students are sitting for 80 minutes with barely any breaks.
I get it. The 10 minute break was a constant source of headaches for administrators. They were dealing with students becoming more and more late to their 7th period and vaping and other bad actions were on the uptick. The students of North Creek were given an inch and we took a mile, so in that angle, we could all understand why the 10 minute break was shortened, but going back to the main point, an extra 5 minutes to stretch my body is a godsend and would help immensely with students being stagnant for so long.
I applaud ASB for working to make the best of a challenging situation, these issues make it so difficult to do the right thing especially since the pushback was immense. Still, we would all benefit from a dedicated broadcasting class, where students could learn in greater depth about broadcast journalism. The students that run The Jungle are very talented and they are doing something that many would immediately refuse. So for that I applaud them, they come out with a video everyweek, that people hate on due to them missing out on their break but thats unfair to these students that are brave enough to put themselves out there and are doing it very well.
Still, honestly, I just want my break back. Taking it away from the entire student body because of a few bad actions is like banning everyone from flying just because there are some criminals who are on a no fly list. Its unethical to think that everyone is going to support The Jungle but thats because people are upset about their break. In the bigger picture, a break is a lot more of a needed resource and you can’t complain about other people being mad about it being taken away.
