North Creek High School’s volleyball team has made history this year! No other team in North Creek’s history has ever reached the finals at the state level. And after taking their only loss during the final part of the tournament to the Wenatchee Panthers, the team has placed second overall.
From the start of the season it was clear that the team would be impressive, but the question was how good would they be? The answer can be found in the team being undefeated in KingCo, going 13-0, being 25-3 overall throughout the entire season, and placing 2nd in the 4A state tournament.
Going into state, the team would have to do without the starting setter and Norfolk commit Mariyah Young. This loss for some teams could shatter morale and confidence, but luckily for North Creek that wasn’t the case.
The team put their resilience on display in the tournament, not dropping a single set throughout the first two matches. In the semi-finals the team faced off against the talented Olympia Bears. For the first time this season, the North Creek Jaguars were the underdog. The team made a statement by going up 2-0 in the match and going on to win 3-2.
Going into the championship game, this team met and even exceeded all expectations that many had of them before first entering the season. If you’d told many people that the North Creek Jaguars would go from getting knocked out and placing 8th in state, to playing for the state title, they probably wouldn’t have believed you.
Despite their effort, the team came up just short of the state title and lost 3-2 to the Wenatchee Panthers. This volleyball season is one that won’t be easily forgotten for a while at North Creek High School.
This is the first time in North Creek’s history that a team has placed so highly at the state level, and to be the first to do so is to leave a mark on history that won’t fade with time.
