Movies engage us in stories near and far, help us form thoughts and challenge them. But what makes a movie so great? Nowadays people seem to watch anything that catches their eyes, or movies that are hyped up by the public. However, there is a lot more to a movie than many people realize. Movies are a way to showcase a story in a visual medium in a way books can’t. But movies aren’t books, and making a book into a movie is no easy feat. So the job of a movie is to make the 1-2 hour(s) of the movie enjoyable and memorable. The unfortunate thing about recent movies is that they have started to cut out time from character development to add more time for action. This causes the movies to feel a little disconnected from the audience. Not only that, but the plot of the movies ends up being a little more confusing or contrived.Character motivations and goals are unclear or murky at best. Or maybe the villain’s backstory is very cheap so the battles aren’t suspenseful anymore. The amount of action, explosions, and how fast the plot develops doesn’t make the movies feel real anymore. It becomes too obvious that the movies are a jump from our reality, and it makes it harder to appreciate the growth of characters.
This is why I find slower paced movies are much more enjoyable to watch. Nothing is rushed and the plot is perfectly carried out in a more natural way. You are also given time to grow with the character throughout the film. Slower paced movies work with the characters like books do. This in turn helps make the character’s goal more meaningful when it’s finally achieved. In a way the characters feel more human, more real. Like explaining why a villain does what they do, or hate the protagonist so passionately.. What makes a movie great? A good character build and a meaningful plot can make any movie more captivating. It doesn’t really matter how big the explosions are, or how many fight scenes there are. If the movie’s plot, story, or messages don’t make any sense then there is no point of appreciating the story. It’s a lot more entertaining in the long term when we can connect or relate to the character because their actions would make more sense. This is why slow paced movies are more memorable and gratifying than fast paced movies. Fast paced movies may have en- gaging action sequences, but then what’s the point of watching the whole movie? The point of movies is to show a story that is fulfilling and worthwhile.
