Valentine’s Day. The season of love. Not just romantic love, but love all around.
But what about love between friends? What about those who haven’t found their true love yet? For the past 15 years, women around the world have gotten together to celebrate friendships. The special day is February 13, the day before Valentine’s Day. The holiday encourages girls to get together with their friends for a fun-filled day with your gals; hence the name, Gal-entines!
Galentine’s Day activities are meant to be fun and a celebration for friendship. Friends get together, go out to eat, have slumber parties, decorate cookies, you name it. So how did Galentine’s Day start? How long has it been a tradition? On February 11th, 2010, the popular TV show Parks and Recreation aired an episode titled Galentine’s Day. Since then, it’s been a tradition for girls.
“I’m doing it with my friend group, so with about eight of my friends.” Gagana Rudra Bodala, a sophomore at North Creek High School said. Bodala and her friends love to spend Galentine’s together. “We are getting together with friends, we are laughing and having fun, so it’s just like a fun time.” Bodala said. “This is the biggest one we are doing so far…but it’s usually once a year, just for fun.” Bodala and her friends have done celebrations in the past, but this year, they’re going all out!
“My favorite tradition is we all get together and do different things… and then we decorate brownies and cookies.” Bodala described. She and her friends get together, bake treats, and decorate them for the season. Baking is truly one of the best ways to bond with your friends, with the reward of a sweet treat when you’re done!
Nothing beats spending quality time with the people you love the most, friends and family included. Whether you want to watch silly rom-coms, go shopping, or do some baking, try hosting a Galentine’s Day party to spread the love!
