It’s independent work time during class, I’m listening to my favorite artist while I work. My teacher tells me to take off my headphones because the school doesn’t allow it. The school reiterated studies by experts that showed students work better with no noise or music because it helps them process words better and focus on one thing.
I would disagree and say it depends on the type of music you’re listening to. Hip hop, pop, and soft ambient music are different types with some being more calming than others.
A study from the University of Maryland shows that it does depend on the type of music you listen to while you work. Phyllis Medina, a program director of psychology says “folks respond to music differently” and “studying can be stressful, and excessive anxiety can hinder learning and memory consolidation. The right choice of music, such as instrumental or ambient music, can help block out distractions, improve concentration, and maintain attention during study sessions”.
I think students should at least be allowed to listen to just instrumental or ambient music through wired headphones on our chromebooks. I think that music helps some students while others don’t work well listening to music. If students know that they don’t work well with noise, they shouldn’t listen to it. It only affects their own grades, so I think students should be able to have a choice whether to listen to music or not, but only instrumental or ambient music.
Another study from the National Library of Medicine shows that music with lyrics did hinder students’ visual and verbal memory and reading comprehension, but instrumental music didn’t have many positive nor negative effects on learning other than instrumental music can help relax you. If there are no effects, it should be up to the students. If I know I can listen to music while working, it makes it more fun and makes me want to work to continue listening to music.
