The girls varsity basketball season is right around the corner and the team is set with new goals this season. With a record last year of 11-16 and being 7th in KingCo the team is looking to step it up.
“My team’s overall goal is to build some comradery, to grow as a team and to try to win a few basketball games,” said head coach Calvin McHenry. McHenry shared his goals for the team and feels very confident about achieving them.
“Our biggest issue is that we lack varsity experience with most of the kids and we lack height,” McHenry said. To make up for the lack of height and experience, McHenry wants improve defense and lessen the number of turnovers.
However McHenry mentions a big loss to the team from last season. Kyleene Filimaua, who stood six feet tall and was talented at rebounding, has graduated. The plan to amend their loss includes having a couple people step up and contribute more to the team by rebounding, and also by increasing their defensive presence.
Two new freshmen made the varsity team this year, including Sydeney Mitchell and Mahi Parikh. Additionally, a new student named Ahlam Mohamud came in from Oregon and also made North Creek’s varsity team. “I think what she brings is defensive intensity and also brings a very high level of enthusiasm,” said Coach McHenry, talking about Mohamud.
Besides the importance of good defense, having a good attitude will definitely give the team a boost this season. With the addition of new players, the team will hopefully benefit this season and improve their performance during games, especially when it comes to defense, less turnovers, and increased rebounds.
