As Christmas season rolls in, it is inevitable that we will all be infected with the holiday spirit and expected by those around us to give gifts. And while those with piles of money to spare may make a trip to Amazon.com and buy all their gifts, some prefer to DIY their gifts instead, adding a more personalized touch to the holiday presents they give.
Homemade coasters are rising in popularity due to the low cost that it takes to make them. One trip to Fred Meyer or Michael’s, and you can find all of the materials you need for a coaster. Not only is a coaster simple to make, requiring only a flat piece of cork and paint to draw on designs, it is a practical choice of gift, especially useful during the winter months.
However, for a more heartfelt present, one might consider looking into making a photo album or scrapbook. Although they may be time-consuming, an album or a scrapbook can be a helpful scribe in documenting the precious moments between you and the person you are presenting the gift to.
Along a similar line of thinking, one could give a book-loving friend the gift of an annotated book. It may not seem like much, but a fully annotated book shows the receiver that the person who gave it to them not only read the book themselves, but also wishes to share their thoughts with whomever receives said gift. An annotated book also displays the time and effort that went into it’s creation, since it is time-consuming to both read a book and write down thoughtful notes in certain interesting passages.
Lastly, if one has the materials or skills, one might even make a candle, bath bomb, or some small work of pottery. Obviously, these products require certain levels of skill in their creator, but for a loved one, it could be worth the work.
Though it might be easier to order a gift off of Amazon, homemade gifts show the receiver the level of care and thoughtfulness put into the gift. After all, it’s the thought that counts.
