On October 1st, 2024, a mobile device and Task Force meeting was held at 6-7:30 p.m. in the Board Room of the Northshore Administrative Center. During this meeting, parents, students, and educators of the Northshore School District were invited to discuss the possible disruption of devices at school. Participants were allowed to voice their concerns for the safety of children without their devices at school; also, being able to sign up to be a part of the mobile task force to keep the NSD mobile free.
The Task Force will try to meet starting “mid-to late- October 2024,” says the NSD. Moving forward, the school district’s hopes to reduce the use of mobile devices at school to help all students and staff become more productive. People who are eligible to apply to be a part of the Task Force are a minimum of two Parents, two Students from both middle and high school, six Teachers, one School Administrator, one representative of Technology Services, one representative of Racial and Educational Justice, one School Counselor, one representative of Teaching and Learning, and finally one representative of Data and Research. The goal of this Task Force is to help develop a policy, which will be recommended to “district administrators in December 2024,” says the NSD.
NSD believes that a school environment without mobile devices will possibly create a safer, more respectful and focused learning environment. They are potentially even deciding to completely ban mobile devices from schools in the district. However, before making any decisions, they hope to ask for the opinion of NSD community members to ensure everyone is on the same page.
