Following their first concert in October, North Creek’s string and chamber orchestras will continue to perform. Here are some events to put down on the calendar. The orchestra will be performing at the annual Performing Arts assembly on Friday, December 1st, followed by their second concert on Tuesday, December 12, located in the North Creek theater at 7pm.

In February and April, orchestras from schools across the state will be able to compete all for a chance at competing in state. Orchestras from schools all across the district will be competing, so those who choose to participate will be up against quite the challenge. Their third concert will be held on Thursday, March 14, soon followed by their fourth concert on Tuesday, June 4.

All of that work takes a lot of preparation. Members of the orchestra put hours of rehearsal and practice , “I have to do a lot of work outside of orchestra class,” said Lizzy Robinson, who has been playing the viola since fourth grade.

Orchestra requires intense listening, not just focusing on your own sound, but other instruments as well, “The end goal is to play together, to combine our sounds as cohesively as possible, and to recreate great music that was either written last year or last century,” said director, Paul Christian.

Each orchestra is playing different music, with ranging levels of difficulty. One of the chamber groups is playing a version of John Rutter’s Suite for Strings, and the string orchestra is working on an arrangement of Brahms Hungarian Dance No. 1. The groups playing in the upcoming concert on December 12 are playing a variety of pieces by Piazzola.
